What is detoxing?

Our bodies are always detoxifying. Our kidneys, liver, lymphatic system, gut, and brain are constantly disposing of waste that inhibits our body’s efficient functioning. Under normal circumstances, it is a pretty well-oiled machine and can carry out these processes well. However, at times of stress, following illness, or as a consequence of frequent exposure to toxic substances which are increasingly all around us each day, our body’s efforts can be slowed.

When our vital organs are unable to work efficiently, poor health can result. Taking small steps to cleanse and nurture our bodies can help to prevent illness, improve mental clarity, enhance skin condition, boost energy, and aid digestion.

Do you need a detox?

Some of the signs you may benefit from a detox are: fatigue, pimple breakouts, frequent headaches, constipation, bad breath and/or body odour, picking up colds and bugs easily and carrying stubborn excess body weight. If you also frequently drink tea, coffee or alcohol or eat a lot of convenience foods (take-out, ready meals, sugary/salty snack foods) your body could benefit from a spring clean.

Here are my 5 top tips to give your body a detox boost.

1. Drink plenty of water

Hydration is probably the single most important step in helping your body detox. Water is vital for your body to function at even a basic level, let alone optimally. It has roles in almost every bodily function: helps eliminate toxins, break down food, absorb essential nutrients, regulate body temperature, lubricate joints, moisturise skin, regulate blood pressure…it’s miraculous. And it comes right out of the tap. Aim for around 1.5l per day, more if you are doing exercise.

2. Eat plenty of antioxidant-rich foods

Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances which help our bodies to deal with harmful molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are generated when the body breaks down food into energy, after exercise, following exposure to pollution, cigarette smoke and even sunlight.

When free radicals accumulate they can cause a condition called oxidative stress which can result in damage to DNA and cells, and chronic disease. The most well-known antioxidants are vitamins E, C and beta-carotene, as well as selenium and manganese.

The best sources of antioxidants are from our food, specifically a diet rich in plant foods (fruits, veggies, nuts, beans, herbs and spices). Some antioxidant-rich foods/beverages to try are berries, apples, dark leafy greens, broccoli, carrots, beetroot, radish, walnuts, pecans, sunflower seeds, cocoa, cloves, cinnamon, oregano, thyme, sage, turmeric, green tea. But variety is the spice of life so eat as varied a selection of plant foods as you can. And dried or fresh fruit, herbs and spices count.

3. Cut out the toxins

Well it’s no good helping your body to get rid of toxins if you’re pumping it full of more toxins while you’re doing it. Ever heard of fighting a losing battle? Cut down on caffeine, alcohol, refined sugars, processed foods, oh and no cigarettes!

4. De-stress

According to one of my health heroes, Dr Rupy Aujla, “stress activates the immune system to create an inflammatory environment…and this can lead to oxidative stress”, which, as I already said, is an accumulation of damaging free radicals which can seriously negatively impact our health. Try to implement some simple stress-relieving techniques throughout your day. Go for a walk outside in the fresh air and listen to the birds, or the sea, or whatever nature you happen to be near. Try deep breathing exercises, yoga and meditation. Be aware of the main sources of stress in your life and try to avoid them where possible.

5. Sleep

When we sleep our body repairs itself. Also, when we sleep levels of the hormone melatonin increase. Melatonin is a powerful antioxidant. So be sure to get plenty of sleep – aim for 8 hours of good sleep a night (that means in bed by 10.30pm people!).
